Description
The under-most garment that was basic to women of the colonial, fur trade and civil war era was the Chemise. This could serve both as an undergarment and nightgown but was also called a Shift or Smock and was used as a dress for everyday use. Traditionally made of cotton, fine linen or even silk it has a gathered scooped neckline and gathers either at or above the elbows. The inclusion of tucks or gathers on the sleeves and gussets under the arms are construction details similar to the men’s shirts of the time period.
This chemise can be worn made in solid fabric as for use in an undergarment. Or, it may be made of calico and worn with a belt and used as a dress as was common back in the day. Lace may be added to the neckline and sleeves and it can be made with or without a bottom ruffle. Use the pulldown menus to make your choices.
