Shifts prior to this period were most generally made of bleached or partially bleached linen. The primary referencefor this shift says, “It is now become very much the dashiont ouse fine calico for shifts, instead of Irish Linen.  Calico is a cotton cloth which came in many rades, adn in 1804-7, was described in Thomas Sheraton’s Encyclopedia “In commerce a sort of cloth resembling linens made of cotton. The name is taken from CALICUT the firt place at which the Portuguese landed when they discovered the Indian Trade… Plain cloth would have been used for this purpose, do not use printed or dyed cloth!
